New year, new you is the mantra we hear every January, but the epidemic of individuals struggling with their weight gets worse each year. Pennsylvanias obesity rate stands at a staggering 31 percent, up 50 percent since 2000. This has serious health implications on our commonwealth and is a leading driver of chronic diseases. Combating this public health problem is not a partisan issue.

Thankfully, more than 150 bipartisan members of the House of Representatives and 17 U.S. Senators have joined to sponsor the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, which takes on this problem by providing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with the authority to provide beneficiaries with the tools to manage weight and treat obesity. It also expands benefits to include behavioral counseling from qualified health care providers and allows Medicare Part D coverage to include FDA-approved drugs for chronic weight management.

Struggling with your weight is a real-world problem and these bipartisan legislators, including Pennsylvanias own Mike Kelly, are working to tackle it head-on. I hope Pennsylvanias two senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey would join Pennsylvania Congressmen Kelly and over 150 of his colleagues in Congress to solve this public health problem.
