A liquid diet for weight loss: Is it effective and sustainable?

New Delhi: We all know that losing weight is no cakewalk, and requires a lot of effort and determination to get into our best shape. Diet and workout play very important roles when it comes to weight loss. The logic is simple -if you eat limited calories, most of which are used by your body for energy, very few or none of them are stored in the body as fat. However, the simple logic can often be mistaken for eating less, or not eating at all.

This confusion or myth that eating less or not eating has led people to believe in different diets and meal plans for weight loss. Another reason why people have decided that starving themselves may be a good idea is for the process of detoxing their bodies. Both of these reasons have given birth to juice cleanse, and liquid diets, propagated as healthy methods to lose weight. However, are they really effective and sustainable?

A liquid diet, as the name suggests, means that you only consume liquids, and they are your only source of nutrition or energy. Liquid diets can be of various types some are limited to fruit and vegetable juices or shakes consumed three to four times a day, while some replace just one or two meals with liquids.

Most liquid diets are performed on your own, but if you have any existing health conditions like diabetes, you must get medical supervision for such a diet.

Now that you know what liquid diets are all about, it is also important to know if they are effective. Liquid diets do sound like a very easy way to lose weight and maybe too good to be true.

The truth of the matter is, that liquid diets can be effective. They follow the simple logic of limiting calories or consuming just enough to provide the body with enough energy to get through the day. Liquid diets may also work because they take into account the key role of portion control in weight loss. However, like most diets that help you lose weight quickly, a liquid diet may not be sustainable.

Given that a liquid diet means surviving on liquids for a long period of time, limiting your calories and not eating solid food, it would be an easy guess to answer questions about its sustainability.

Not only is it difficult to survive on liquids completely, but the results of the diet may also not last for longer periods. When you cut down on calorie consumption, the metabolism of your body slows down, because it starts to burn calories in a slower fashion to save some energy. On a liquid diet, when you cut off calories from your diet, you may lose weight initially, but eventually, your metabolism will adjust to the low-calorie consumption.

It is because of this reason that 'cheat days' are a thing in diets for weight loss because they trick your body into believing that you are not consuming very few calories, and your metabolism does not slow down. Therefore, to keep liquid diets effective for longer periods, you may have to include cheat days in your diet, which include solid food consumption.
