Weight loss tips you can slip in to your everyday life

Losing weight can be hard work. It can be a real psychological and physical effort; denying yourself your favourite foods, counting calories and endless hours in the gym.

It doesn't have to be such a big deal. By making just a few simple lifestyle changes you can lose weight over time without even thinking about it.

BootsWebMD spoke to the experts who've worked out a few painless ways to lose weight - and keep it off.

Here are their top tips on how to lose weight without busting a gut!

Why not get lighter yourself by lightening your foods? One of the easiest ways to cut back without feeling denied is to switch to lower-calorie versions of the foods you love.

A pizza tastes just as good with reduced-fat cheese, and why not have frozen yoghurt rather than ice cream.

Many foods these days have an alternative lower-fat, reduced sugar version.

Avoid high- sugar fizzy drinks; opt for a low-cal version instead. You can even get light beers and low calorie wines.

Food coach and dietitian Sasha Watkins says small changes can make a big difference.

"There are some easy swaps you can make that can help you lose weight without thinking about it. For example, try changing the type of milk you use to skimmed milk. This automatically cuts your daily calories without having to make a big sacrifice and you are more likely to stick to this change in the long term."

Sian Porter, consultant dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, says: "Choose cooking methods which avoid using added fat, like grilling."

You don't have to be down the gym, clad in Lycra, to burn off calories. Just by moving about you'll be losing weight.

Avoid escalators and take the stairs instead; get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way; switch on the radio and dance around the house; stick on your iPod and get on with your housework, cleaning the floors while you work your body!

Why not go out dancing, walk along the beach, chase after your dog, sweep up some leaves, wash the car or do some gardening?

It's all exercise, all burning calories - but doesn't feel like you're actually working out.

Why not make the most of the ultimate drink - water. It's free and has no calories. If you feel hungry it might be that you are actually just thirsty, so have a glass of water and wait for a while to see if it was liquid you were hankering after.

If you have a drink of water before eating, you might not feel the need to eat as much. It can take the edge off your hunger.
