Operation Transformation star Karl Henry is teaming up with TV3s Sinead Desmond to bring 18 novice hillwalkers up four mountains in three days, climbing a total of 3559 metres.

The 35-year-old personal trainer told how the aim of the gruelling challenge is to raise 50,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, a charity close to his heart as his grandmother suffered from the illness.

The team, made up of Allianz workers will start their Four Peaks Challenge on Friday at 8am in Co Kerry climbing 970 metres up the formidable Carrauntoohil.

Saturday sees the group tackle an 814 metre hike up Mweelrea in Co Mayo and the challenge hits an all-time high on Sunday with twin ascents.

First up theres the 850 metre hike up Slieve Donard in Co Down followed by a 925 metre hill walk up Lug na Quilla.

Karl told the Irish Mirror: Its been a lot of hard work over the past 10 weeks to get the group ready, theyve been up the Wicklow mountains every weekend trying to get their blisters sorted and their bodies ready.

Blisters are a major problem especially for the women who have softer feet.

Over the course of the challenge blisters will be a huge problem as will fatigue and guiding the team safely down each mountain is crucial.

We have to finish the challenge before it gets dark so really the pressure is on to get the people up and down the mountains safely.

On the first big training session everyone realised just how tough hill walking can be and theyve all jumped in getting fitter, losing weight and bonding.

Weve one more weekend to get to our fitness at peak level and they need to be prepared for anything.

Karl started on Operation Transformation 11 years ago alongside Gerry Ryan and the late broadcaster took him under his wing. He explained: He taught me a huge amount, when I first started with Gerry I was 23, which is young having done no media training, he was very kind sand he taught me things and egged me on and pushed me to present stuff.

The decade anniversary show was the biggest show to date, a ratings winner.

Karl added: This years show was bigger than ever, were changing the face of Irish health and were making a big dent in it.

As far as I know the show is coming back, nobodys said anything different so fingers crossed.

Speaking about his co-star Kathryn Thomas he said he wasnt sure if hed get a nod for her wedding.

He said: Im delighted Kathryn is getting married, Padraig is a lovely guy, Ive no idea if Ill get an invite.

He told of his proudest moment on the TV show to date storming the Oirechtas looking for changes in our approach to health.

He said: Going into the Oireachtas Committee on health and presenting our study on some of the issues we were having, that was a really proud moment, for a TV show to go into a government organisation and say look this is what we think, that was a proud moment.

People come up to me on the street, it always humbles me, I love helping people to get healthy and the show is a great vehicle to do that.
